Cultural value systems

Every culture has its own specific value system. And within cultures, there are subsystems that are often called virtues that sometimes compete or complement each other. This results in certain categories of values that can be attributed to certain traditional motif structures.

For example, the “Prussian” values of diligence, discipline, loyalty, honesty, reliability, team spirit, while Plato has left us so-called primary virtues: “wisdom, bravery, prudence and justice”.

In addition, within each culture there are so-called subcultures, which within this superordinate culture propagate and / or live more or less different manifestations or interpretations of values. These categorical as well as categorized values inevitably generate friction, which can provoke controversy.

One example is various political parties – including their members, supporters and voters – within a democratic state that has anchored fundamental cultural values in its constitution. Although the parties invoke these shared values, they nevertheless argue about their interpretation, prioritization and shaping in everyday political life.
